Sengliang states: 'What is obtained by these two': contemplating suffering, the two dharmas act together, and nirvāṇa receives the designation of fruition. The two fruitions are suffering. 'Free from all rebirth': birth is the root of suffering, therefore birth is spoken of first. 'Further contemplating the causes and conditions of afflictions': next one contemplates that in the four destinies, karma and afflictions are the causes, and the path of suffering is the fruition. Both causes and fruitions are generally termed the path of existence. The four destinies mutually generate one another, so that their sequence cannot be discerned. Baoliang states: After a wise person contemplates karma, they next contemplate the fruition obtained from karma and afflictions: this is the fifth gate, contemplating suffering, clarifying that karma, afflictions, and suffering mutually generate one another. In the causes and conditions of the six destinies there is no slight pleasure whatsoever; therefore the sage causes one to sever suffering and cultivate the path.
