Daosheng states: About to take away, he first grants. Zhixiu states: From here below is the fourth section, which explains superior cultivation and strips away what they cling to. It has four chapters: First, about to strip it away, he first confirms what they cling to. Second, the bhikṣus then further present various analogies, justifying themselves and faulting others. Third, the Buddha turns the analogies back upon them, showing the bhikṣus’ fault. Fourth, he explains superior cultivation for them. First promising to explain it without yet doing so, he first makes two turns to clarify that their cultivation lacks real meaning, and afterwards properly clarifies cultivation. This is the first chapter.
