Sengliang states: Seeking principle by relying on the scriptures, they initially use [wisdom arising from] hearing and contemplation. Since they do not penetrate deeply into principle, they are like a boat floating on the water. Why is this? Sentient beings originally held the conception of the four inversions, deeming all phenomena to be permanent; the Buddha, wishing to cut this off, taught that everything is impermanent, his intent being directed at the three realms. Erroneously extending this to the dharmakāya, they clung to the teaching and missed the intent. The meaning of being superficial and shallow, without real efficacy, is compared to play. The Record of Jingyi notes that Sengzong stated: 'To amuse themselves' means that upon hearing the teaching of permanence, it is not that they did not have a slight understanding that brought joy to the mind. The Record of Falian notes that Sengzong stated: The myriad goods are the boat, and sweet bliss is the play.
