In the second section, "Revealing the Principle and Demonstrating the Virtues," it first recounts divergent views, next evaluates their merits and defects, and finally reveals the correct doctrine. What are the divergent views? Traditionally, it has been transmitted that from here up to the subsequent "Kāśyapa Chapter" constitutes the main body of the sūtra. Within the main body, roughly divided there are two parts, and finely divided there are six. The rough division into two consists merely of the brief and the detailed: from the beginning up to the "Assembly Chapter" is the brief exposition; after the "Assembly Chapter" is the detailed exposition. The fine division into six is as follows: within the brief there are three: first, explaining the Buddha's actualized fruit; second, from the "three announcements" onward, revealing its contributory causes; third, from "Does the twenty-five existences have a self or not?" onward, manifesting the direct cause of buddha-nature. Within the detailed there are also three: first, the "Assembly's Questions Chapter" expands upon the preceding actualized fruit; second, from "Manifesting Illness" onward expands upon the contributory causes above; third, from the "Siṃha Chapter" onward expands upon the direct cause above. Such are the divergent views.
