The preceding was the first [part], in which the Buddha disclosed the real and discriminated the manifest to Cunda. From here down, Cunda broadly reveals the aforementioned real to Mañjuśrī. Furthermore, previously the Buddha instructed Cunda correctly through principle, generating his understanding of eternity; from here down, Mañjuśrī tests Cunda in reverse, strengthening his understanding of eternity. Now, below Cunda, facing Mañjuśrī, still reveals the real in the preceding two sections: first, corresponding to the latter section, he broadly reveals the reality of the Tathāgata's non-extinction; from "The Tathāgata will next broadly..." downward, he broadly reveals the reality of the Tathāgata's non-dependence. Availing himself of the words, he reveals them in sequence from the latter to the former. In the first [part] there are four: first, Cunda takes up the words and makes an entreaty as a reason; second, Mañjuśrī tests him in reverse; third, Cunda, in response to the test, presents his own understanding; fourth, Mañjuśrī endorses and praises him, strengthening his understanding of eternity. In the first there are three: first, Cunda recounts the Buddha's prior words, showing his own slight wisdom, which cannot conceptualize the profound meaning of the Buddha's nirvāṇa, and therefore requires the Buddha to stay; second, from "I am now together with" downward, he explains that his own understanding ranks high among the superior stream, and having heard the teaching he can bear it, daring to detain the Buddha to stay; third, from "Just as a hungry person" downward, he entreats the Buddha's deep pity, that he must stay for his sake. In the first, "So it is, truly as the holy teaching says" generally recounts the Buddha's words. According to the old sūtra edition, in the preceding verse the Buddha admonished Cunda that he should not deliberate upon the meaning of the Tathāgata; hence now he recounts it: "My wisdom is now slight; how could I deliberate upon the profound meaning of the Tathāgata?"—this specifically recounts the Buddha's words. Because my wisdom is slight and cannot deliberate upon the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa, the Buddha must stay.
