The preceding [text] explained that the Buddha's mental afflictions have already been exhausted; from here down, the fourth [section], Mañjuśrī gives his praise and affirmation. Why is this necessary? Mañjuśrī is a person of exalted status; even if his words were contrary to principle, many people would follow and accept them. Therefore, he praises Cunda to cause people to place their trust [in him]. "So it is, so it is" confirms his words. From "I in this..." downward, he traces the understanding back to himself, revealing that he himself had previously understood it and establishing the correctness of what [Cunda] said. From "[I] merely wished to test..." downward, he brushes away and brings together his previous words. Having known it long himself, it was solely to test the other, and therefore he says 'merely'. To test that the matters understood by you, Cunda, are identical with those of the bodhisattvas, he therefore says 'to test you regarding the matters of the bodhisattvas'. Because Cunda previously stated his own understanding and that he was equal with the great bodhisattvas, it was therefore necessary to test him.
