Within the first, there are two parts: 1. Shining light upon Mañjuśrī's bodily action to urge the offering; 2. Speaking to Cunda with verbal action to urge the offering. Within the former, there are three parts: 1. Shining light upon Mañjuśrī. Why is this necessary? In the text above, Cunda distinguished the true and Mañjuśrī revealed the responsive; now, wishing to confirm and establish what Mañjuśrī revealed, he therefore shines light upon him. Furthermore, Mañjuśrī had already urged the offering earlier; the Tathāgata now wishes to have him urge it again, which is why he shines light. Furthermore, for the Buddha as a great person to speak directly and urge food for himself would be inconvenient for conversion; therefore he shines light upon Mañjuśrī to cause him to urge it first, and afterward he assists in encouraging it. 2. Mañjuśrī encounters the light, understands the sign, and urges him to bestow it quickly. "Encountering this light" means his body encounters the light. "Knowing this matter" means he knows it in his mind: he knows the matter of the Buddha's cessation, and also knows that emitting the light is for the purpose of urging the offering. From "immediately told..." downward is urging with spoken words. First he distinguishes the intent of the light: the Buddha manifests this sign because he will enter nirvāṇa before long; next he encourages him to bestow it quickly. Below, he encourages Cunda to understand the intent of the light: the Buddha emits this light to urge your offering, not without cause and conditions. 3. Cunda, having heard, is choked with grief and remains silent. In the Buddha's verbal urging, the noble intention is earnest, repeated up to three times.
