From here down, the third [part] explains that the responsive undergoes cessation. The text is divided into four: 1. Cunda's entreaty; 2. The Tathāgata's reply; 3. Cunda's grasp and understanding; 4. The Tathāgata's praise and affirmation. Within the first there are two parts: 1. In response to the Tathāgata's previous words 'do not weep', he explains that since the Buddha will not remain, his sorrowful weeping is difficult to stop; 2. From "I only pray..." downward, in response to the Tathāgata's advice above to contemplate the conditioned, he requests the Buddha out of pity to remain long for our sake. What is the intention of the entreaty? Although knowing that the Tathāgata himself is weary of the conditioned, he prays that the Buddha will pity us and remain long in the world for the sake of ourselves and others. Furthermore, we possess these five faults and have not yet been able to abandon them; we pray that the Buddha in his loving pity will remain long in the world to teach us to abandon them.
