“At that time there were immeasurable great disciples” identifies the individuals: having studied after the Buddha, they are called “younger brothers” (disciples); being born through transformation from the Buddha, they are also called “sons.” “Kātyāyana” and the others list their names. From “Encountering the Buddha's light” below, beholding the signs, their sorrow increased. It first speaks of them individually, and then concludes. Individually: encountering the light, “their bodies trembled,” and so forth, indicates that their bodily karma was unsettled; “their minds were troubled,” mental distress; “raising their voices in loud cries,” vocal lamentation. From “Thus” below, it concludes.
