Next the kings are listed. Also because these people's offerings were more than the preceding and less than the following, they are listed here. The text has six distinct parts: first, listing their assembly; second, explaining their offering utensils; third, praising their virtues; fourth, taking the offerings and presenting them to the Buddha; fifth, the Tathāgata not accepting them; sixth, being unsuccessful and stepping back to stay. Within the first section, first those who gathered are explained. From 'except Ajāta[śatru]' down, those who had not gathered are excluded. Having killed his father in the world, his feelings of shame and fear were deep, so he did not come here. Below, their names are listed. For what reason is their number not listed? It is because the kings exceeded five Ganges [sands] but did not fill six Ganges [sands]; their demarcation being difficult to display, they are hidden and not listed. The second can be known. In the third, the praise, self-benefit comes first, followed by benefiting others. Within self-benefit there are four phrases: the first two phrases mean abandoning the heterodox to return to the true; the latter two phrases mean renouncing the small to study the great. Benefiting others can be known; the latter three are easy to understand.
