Next, it explains parinirvāṇa by flowing upward. Within this, it first clarifies retrogressing from the upper to be born in the lower. From "the flows are of two kinds" downward, proceeding from below upward, it first sets forth the two flows and next lists their names. Retrogressing from upper wholesome dharmas to produce lower fetters is called the flow of afflictions. Moreover, severing lower fetters to generate upper afflictions can also be called the flow of afflictions. The gradual increase of the antidote path is called the flow of the path. Below, it explains the meaning of flowing upward in terms of the flow of the path. "From the first to the fourth dhyāna it is likewise" clarifies the meaning of flowing upward below Bṛhatphala; from "there are further two" downward, it clarifies the meaning of flowing upward above Bṛhatphala. Within this, there are three [parts]: 1. briefly dividing into two persons; 2. from "of these two persons, one delights in..." downward, distinguishing the causes to reveal the fruitions; 3. from "this is called" downward, concluding by distinguishing their characteristics. The first section is self-evident.
