第三段中，「所得功德我今說」者，總標許說，謂彼諸佛所得功德今當說矣。次迦葉請「當何名經」，問經名字。此經之中具說多義，當於何義而名此經？「云何持」者，問奉持儀。下佛答之。「此經名為大般涅槃」答其初問，「上語善」等答其後問。於中有二：一嘆經殊勝令人敬持、二「汝今聽」下辯經名德令人樂持。

In the third section, “the merit attained I shall now speak” generally indicates the promise to speak, meaning that the merit attained by those Buddhas will now be spoken. Next, Kāśyapa requests, “What should this sūtra be named?”, asking for the sūtra's name. Within this sūtra, multiple meanings are fully spoken; according to which meaning should this sūtra be named? “How should it be upheld?” asks about the manner of upholding it. Below, the Buddha answers. “This sūtra is named the Mahāparinirvāṇa” answers his first question; “good in the beginning,” and so forth, answers his subsequent question. Herein there are two: first, praising the sūtra's superiority to make people respectfully uphold it; second, from “now listen” downward, distinguishing the merits of the sūtra's name to make people joyfully uphold it.
