In this chapter, three sections are distinguished: first, the outline analysis of the sūtra text; second, the determination with reference to persons; and third, the sequential commentary on the text. What is the outline analysis? The section on the "Four Marks" consists of two parts: first, explaining the virtues of the four marks capable of revealing [the teaching]; second, from "Furthermore, self-rectification means attaining this Great Nirvāṇa" onward, explaining the Dharma that is revealed. Next, as for the determination with reference to persons, there are two kinds of persons: first, the one in whom it is lodged; and second, the one for whose sake it is intended. The one in whom it is lodged is the Buddha; the one for whose sake it is intended is the bodhisattva. The Buddha in whom it is lodged is the teacher who can instruct; the bodhisattvas for whose sake it is intended are those who are taught. If considered with reference to the one in whom it is lodged, the initial set of four marks is the Tathāgata's virtue capable of revealing [the teaching]; therefore, the text below explains it with reference to the Buddha. From "Furthermore, self-rectification means attaining this Great Nirvāṇa" onward is the Dharma revealed by the Tathāgata; that the Tathāgata reveals the meaning of the three things within Great Nirvāṇa is called "revealing the subtle and secret." If considered with reference to those for whose sake it is intended, the initial set of four marks is the bodhisattvas' virtue capable of expounding [the teaching]; therefore, this sūtra sets forth the fundamental theme at the outset, stating: "A bodhisattva expounding and revealing nirvāṇa has the meaning of four marks," and below it concludes by stating: "A bodhisattva distinguishing, expounding, and revealing the Mahāparinirvāṇa in this way has the meaning of four marks." The six-fascicle sūtra also shares this explanation, wherefore that sūtra states: "A bodhisattva endowed with four kinds of marks and meanings is able to expound the Great Nirvāṇa for sentient beings." From "Furthermore, self-rectification means attaining this Great Nirvāṇa" onward is the Dharma expounded by the bodhisattvas, which they expound to others relying on what the Buddha has revealed; this is similar in meaning to the earlier "Chapter on Longevity." In that chapter, with reference to the one in whom it is lodged, it is called the Tathāgata's karmic deed of longevity; with reference to those for whose sake it is intended, it is said that the bodhisattvas attain longevity through such karmic conditions. What is explained in the "Chapter on the Diamond Body" is also like this. Such is the determination with reference to persons.
