釋初難中句別有三:一明如來所斷煩惱畢竟永盡,故非無常,言「滅煩惱」。「不名物」者,不得名為無常之物。「何以」下釋,先問、後解,所斷煩惱永畢竟故,不得名為無常物矣;二「是故」下結成常義;三「是句」下嘆以顯勝,所謂是此滅煩惱句。煩惱滅故,不復驅馳生死往來,故云「寂靜」。超過凡夫二乘近學,故「無有上」。
In explaining the first objection, there are three distinct lines: First, it clarifies that the afflictions severed by the Tathāgata are completely and permanently exhausted, and therefore they are not impermanent, stating 'the extinction of afflictions.' 'Is not called a thing' means it cannot be called an impermanent thing. The explanation from 'why...' onward first questions and then explains: because the severed afflictions are permanently and completely exhausted, they cannot be called impermanent things. Second, from 'therefore...' onward concludes the meaning of permanence. Third, from 'this phrase...' onward praises it to reveal its supremacy, namely this phrase of 'extinguishing afflictions.' Because afflictions are extinguished, one no longer rushes about coming and going in birth and death; hence it is called 'tranquil.' It surpasses ordinary beings and the recent learning of the two vehicles, and hence is 'unsurpassed.'
