The preceding was the first part, clearing away doubts regarding bodily traces; from here below is the second part, clearing away doubts regarding verbal traces. Within this, it first clears away the verbal traces of extinction; from "Kāśyapa spoke again: 'I now definitely know that the Tathāgata, the World-Honoured One, has no secret [treasury]'" onward, it clears away the verbal traces of impermanence spoken in the past. In the former part, there are three sections: first, clearing away the traces of extinction to explain that the Buddha truly exists; second, Kāśyapa's expression of understanding; third, the Tathāgata's confirmation. In the first part, Kāśyapa first raises the question to initiate the discussion, and afterwards the Buddha answers it. In the question: "How is the Tathāgata called permanent?" rebukes the Buddha's teaching of permanence; from "as the Buddha said" onward, he challenges and refutes the Buddha's permanence; "just as when a lamp is extinguished it has no location," adduces the Buddha's past words; "the Tathāgata is also like this: extinguished and having nothing that exists," extends the Buddha's own analogy to him. If after extinction there is nothing that exists, what is spoken of as permanent? This objection is identical to the one above, so why make it again? The previous objection challenged the Buddha, and the Tathāgata in response to the question directly explained the Buddha's permanence, but his past words had not yet been dispelled; hence this repeated question. Furthermore, previously he challenged the Buddha as not permanent, and the Buddha answered explaining permanence; here Kāśyapa challenges the Buddha as not existent, and the Buddha answers explaining existence. Since the intent differs from the preceding, he asks it again.
