Below clarifies liberation. The text has five distinct sections: first, clarifying that nirvāṇa is the abode of liberation; second, from "Kāśyapa said: 'What is called nirvāṇa?'" onward, unfolding the virtues of liberation with respect to the abode; third, from "Therefore liberation becomes immeasurable..." onward, concluding with praise to reveal its superiority; fourth, Kāśyapa's comprehension; fifth, the Tathāgata concluding by exhorting them to cultivate and learn. In the first section, there are two parts: first, citing the former verse to ask the Buddha for an explanation, wishing thereby to determine that nirvāṇa is the abode of liberation; second, from "What is called great, its nature is vast..." onward, differentiating and explaining the characteristics of nirvāṇa with respect to the abode. In the former part, first is the question, wherein he first cites the verse to ask generally. "Having nothing accumulated" is the practice of having few desires among the eight awarenesses—not seeking what has not yet been attained; "knowing contentment in food" is the practice of knowing contentment—moderating what has already been attained. "Like a bird flying through the sky, its tracks cannot be found" is the eighth, the practice of non-proliferation. The bird is an analogy for the worthy and noble ones; the sky is an analogy for the nature of dharmas. Realizing the real and departing from marks, it is difficult to seek through marks, just as a bird flies through the sky and its tracks cannot be searched out. These three are briefly cited; those in between—quietude, vigor, right mindfulness, dhyāna, and wisdom—are omitted and not cited. The purport of this verse is that its latter half is the place of liberation in Great Nirvāṇa. What is the meaning of this? He requests the Buddha to explain it. From "Who attains..." onward, he asks specifically with respect to persons.
