Next, the arising of practice is explained: "How does a bodhisattva attain an indestructible assembly?" asks about practice for oneself. When practice for oneself is perfected, being identical with the bodhisattvas and incapable of discord, it is called an "indestructible assembly"; hence the text below states, "Through the bodhisattva's diligent exertion, what is attained by protecting the Dharma is a retinue that cannot be destroyed." "How does one serve as eyes and a guide for the blind?" asks about practice that benefits others. Alternatively, these two questions both concern benefiting others: attaining an indestructible assembly is the practice of gathering people, where because of diligent protection of the Dharma everyone joyfully follows, hence they cannot be destroyed; serving as a guide for the blind is the practice of opening and transforming. Below, the attainment of the fruit is explained. First, the words "How does one manifest multiple heads?" refer to speaking differently in accordance with different kinds [of beings]. "How does one who speaks increase like the new moon?" means teaching gradually in accordance with faculties. This text is inverted and also incomplete. If corrected, it should read: "How does one who speaks increase like the crescent moon?"; if complete, it should read: "How does one who speaks nurture sentient beings, just as worldly parents teach an infant sixteen months old?"—judging by the answer, it should be so. When a small child is first born and sixteen months old, its speech is not correct; when parents teach it, they first imitate its speech and later teach correct words; the Buddha is also like this: he first teaches Hīnayāna Dharma in accordance with sentient beings, and later teaches the Mahāyāna for them; therefore it is now asked.
