就初段中，「正法滅」者經法滅時、「毀正戒」者律法毀時、「增長破戒時」對前毀戒、「非法盛時」對前法滅，此之四句約法辨時。「聖人不現」，無善人時；「受畜一切」，有惡人時，此之二句就人辨時。

In the first section, 'when the true Dharma is destroyed' refers to the time when the sūtra teachings are destroyed; 'when the correct precepts are broken' refers to the time when the Vinaya teachings are broken; 'when precept-breaking increases' corresponds to breaking the precepts above; 'when the non-Dharma flourishes' corresponds to the destruction of the Dharma above—these four lines distinguish the time in terms of the teachings. 'Noble ones do not appear' refers to the time when there are no good people; 'accepting and keeping all [impermissible things]' refers to the time when there are evil people—these two lines distinguish the time in terms of persons.
