The above was the first, comprising five phrases clarifying retribution for offenses. The second can be known. In the third section, "If one does not uphold the precepts, how can one see the nature?" directly clarifies that various offenses can obstruct liberation; from "all sentient beings" and below clarifies that only by separating from offenses does one attain liberation; from "nine-part canon" and below resolves doubt and reveals the Dharma. What does the doubt look like? In the teachings of the past, it was not stated that there is a nature; how can it now be said that by upholding the precepts one sees the nature? Therefore, it is now explained: because in the nine-part canon there were no vaipulya [sūtras], it did not speak of possessing the nature; although those sūtras did not speak of it, in principle it truly exists, hence by upholding [the precepts] one comes to see it. Below, it clarifies the persons who receive [them], distinguishing the correct and concealing the heterodox.
