In the tenth pair, it first discriminates the deviant and the correct, and afterward discusses receiving people. External teachings are called deviant, while internal teachings are called correct. Within the deviant there are four: first, stating that the deviant practices of non-Buddhist austerities are the correct path; second, stating that the Tathāgata permits the ordination of evil persons, the rootless, and the like; third, stating that the Tathāgata permits keeping various impure objects—therein, it first discriminates what is permitted, and from "Except for this" below, clarifies that the deviant differs from the correct with respect to what is not permitted; fourth, claiming that the Tathāgata said grass and trees all have life span. These four kinds are called what Māra has spoken. Below, in distinguishing the correct, it overturns only three phrases, leaving the second phrase abbreviated and not overturned. "I also do not permit standing constantly on one leg, up to harming living beings, esoteric directions, and incantations" overturns the first one above; from "Cowrie shells" below, it overturns the third above and overturns the fourth. Therein, it first rebukes the deviant to reveal the correct; from "I permit only" below, it distinguishes the correct from the deviant; "I permit consuming only the five kinds of flavors" and so forth directly overturns the third; "I state that the four great elements have no life span" directly overturns the fourth; from "If there is" below, it concludes.
