In the application [of the metaphor], first it directly applies it according to the text, and from “skillful means” onward it reapplies it according to the particulars. In the previous direct application, it applies it in sequence according to the three sections above. “The buddha-nature is likewise” corresponds to the gold storehouse within the house in the first section. “All sentient beings cannot see it” corresponds to the previous household members, great and small, not seeing it. “Just as with that treasure storehouse, poor people do not know of it” adduces the metaphor to match it: the treasure storehouse matches the nature, and the poor people not knowing matches sentient beings not seeing it. “I now everywhere reveal to sentient beings the buddha-nature veiled by afflictions” corresponds to the second section; in the previous metaphor there were three pairs, and here they are combined and applied. From “just as that poor [woman]” onward adduces the metaphor to match it. “The Tathāgata today everywhere reveals to sentient beings the treasure storehouse of all awakenings” corresponds to digging out the gold storehouse right in her house in the third section; “namely, the buddha-nature” indicates the substance of that storehouse. From “yet sentient beings” onward corresponds to the woman seeing it and giving rise to joy in the third section; “venerating the Tathāgata” corresponds to honoring that person. Within the reapplication according to the particulars below, there are three distinct matters: first, the person who can uncover it; second, the one to whom it is shown; third, the gold that is uncovered. “One of skillful means” adduces the person who can uncover it, and “is the Tathāgata” applies it to the Dharma. “The poor woman” adduces the person to whom it is shown, and “is all sentient beings” applies it to the Dharma. “Gold” adduces what is uncovered, and “is the buddha-nature” applies it to the Dharma.
