In the second clause, "there was a person who smelled its fragrance and knew that the ground had the medicine" adduces that bodhisattva hearing of and seeing the buddha-nature to verify that the nature exists; "a person" is a metaphor for a bodhisattva; hearing the name based on the sūtra is called "smelling the fragrance"; knowing that the body possesses the nature is therefore expressed as "knowing that the ground must have this medicine"; declaring that it truly exists is called "must have," not meaning that it will only begin to exist in the future. From "in the past there was a king" down adduces the Buddha's realization and vision to clarify that the nature exists; a past Buddha is the "king"; wishing to seek the buddha-nature in his own body is called "in the Snow Mountains"; cultivating the Path life after life in order to see the buddha-nature is therefore expressed as "for the sake of the medicine, in various places, constructing wooden pipes to collect this medicine"; when the merits of cultivation are perfected, the principle is revealed through conditions, which is called "when the medicine ripened"; appearing within the body of aggregates is called "emerging from the ground"; becoming manifest in the mind of practice is called "gathering in the wooden pipes"; realizing and encountering the original nature is called "the taste being genuine."
