In the fifth clause, "ordinary persons" is a metaphor for ordinary beings, practitioners of the two vehicles, and bodhisattvas of initial practice; that their practice revealing the nature is slight is called "meager merit"; seeking by means of conceptualizing thoughts is therefore spoken of as "hoeing and chopping"; striving to seek but not seeing is spoken of as "applying effort in weariness and hardship without obtaining it."
