In the former part, first there are two and a half verses that use two analogies to illustrate one dharma; the latter two verses use one analogy to illustrate one dharma. Again, within the former, the first verse and a half sets up the analogies to reveal the dharma. In the analogies, the first verse takes ambrosia as the analogy, based on foolishness and wisdom to explain harm and benefit; the latter half-verse takes poison as the analogy, also based on foolishness and wisdom to explain harm and benefit. The next verse applies them: within it, the first half applies to ambrosia above; saying "the ambrosia of unobstructed wisdom" means that this *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* is called ambrosia for those persons of unobstructed wisdom; "that is to say, the Mahāyāna" points out its essence. "Such Mahāyāna is also called poison" applies to the latter half-verse, first citing what was just mentioned, and the latter phrase from "Mahāyāna" down directly explains poison, overturning the ambrosia above.
