Next, he asks about taking refuge in the Dharma: "How does one take refuge in the Dharma? Please explain it for me" asks about the reason for taking refuge—why do you urge me to take refuge in this Dharma? "How is there mastery and non-mastery?" asks about what is attained. The true self that is realized is called mastery; the virtues of expedient practice that do not share the nature of the true self are called non-mastery; how can they be permitted to be attained? Alternatively, the eightfold mastery-self of the buddhas is called mastery, whereas the nature of conditioned cultivation and antidotes is flux and change, which is called non-mastery. The preceding line, "how does one attain mastery?", asks about what is attained; the latter line, "how is there non-mastery?", asks about what is practiced.
