3.48

問曰：瞿師是初果人，已能降魔，不為魔惑，云何無學猶須佛教？釋言：望彼小乘之法，苦忍已上見法分明，魔不能惑，不假佛教；望大乘法，乃至無學猶為魔亂，故須佛教。故下阿難雖得初果，猶為六萬四千億魔之所惑亂。

Question: Ghoṣila was a person of the first fruit, already able to subjugate Māra and not deluded by Māra; why do those of non-learning still need the Buddha's instruction? Explanation: Looking from the perspective of the Hīnayāna teachings, from the forbearance of suffering onward one clearly sees the Dharma, Māra cannot delude one, and one does not need the Buddha's instruction; looking from the perspective of the Mahāyāna teachings, even up to non-learning one can still be disrupted by Māra, hence one needs the Buddha's instruction. Therefore, below, Ānanda, although having attained the first fruit, was still confused and disrupted by sixty-four thousand koṭis of māras.
