Within the analogy there are four [points]: first, "sugarcane," etc., is an analogy clarifying the substance of the Dharma; second, from "wherever there is a place" onward reveals its pre-eminence through persons; third, from "or there is someone" onward clarifies the reason for abandonment—because people abandon the Great and study the Small, it is abandoned; abandoning the Great and studying the Small is called "eating millet," and studying and reading worldly texts is called "and barnyard grass"; taking the inferior as superior is therefore called "foremost"; studying the Small due to the past is called "due to receiving retribution"; fourth, from "if it is a person of merit" onward clarifies the reason for flourishing—because people abandon the Small and study the Great, it flourishes. "Ears have never heard the names of millet and barnyard grass" is an analogy for not hearing the Small; "only eating nonglutinous rice" is an analogy for purely studying the Great.
