In the fourth [section], on benefits, there are three distinct parts: first, explaining that hearing the sūtra and having long-standing faith brings benefit; second, from 'Just as when a person goes forth from home' downward, explaining that initial faith brings benefit; and third, from 'Or there may be beings' downward, explaining that even slight faith brings benefit. The benefit of long-standing faith belongs to [the bodhisattvas on] the grounds; the benefit of initial faith belongs to those before the grounds, [at the stages of] the lineage nature and understanding and practice; the benefit of slight faith belongs to those before the good destinies. Within the benefit of long-standing faith, first it explains that one's own faith brings benefit, and from 'If among my' downward, that transforming others brings benefit. In the benefit of one's own faith, it first explains that through the power of the sūtra the faithful person's body is adorned, so that all people delight in seeing them. From 'Kings' downward, the power of the sūtra adorns their speech, so that whatever they say is revered and believed. In the benefit of transforming others, it first encourages propagating the teaching; 'If among my śrāvaka disciples' specifies the persons encouraged: these are actually bodhisattvas who transmit the Buddha's teaching and are therefore called śrāvakas, as the Lotus Sūtra says, 'We now are true śrāvakas, causing all to hear the voice of the Buddha path,' and so forth. 'Wishing to perform a rare deed' marks what they seek: practicing the Mahāyāna is called performing the foremost and rare deed; 'they should extensively explain the Mahā[yāna]' directly encourages propagating the teaching. From 'Just as' downward, it explains that speaking brings benefit, being able to cause hearers to eradicate sinful hindrances; first a simile, and then the application.
