4.104

喻別有七：一無想天喻、二樹神喻、三非想天喻、四虛空舍宅喻、五眾生心喻、六是幻喻、七上中下喻。經文有五：一舉無想及樹神喻約之顯法、二舉無想及非想喻約之顯法、三舉空舍眾生心識及無想喻約之顯法、四舉幻喻約之顯法、五舉上中下人之喻約之顯法。

There are seven distinct similes: 1. the simile of the heaven of non-conception; 2. the simile of the tree spirit; 3. the simile of the heaven of neither conception nor non-conception; 4. the simile of the empty house; 5. the simile of the minds of sentient beings; 6. the simile of illusion; 7. the simile of superior, middling, and inferior. In the sūtra text there are five [parts]: 1. presenting the similes of non-conception and the tree spirit, applying them to reveal the doctrine; 2. presenting the similes of non-conception and neither conception [nor non-conception], applying them to reveal the doctrine; 3. presenting the similes of the empty house, sentient beings' minds and consciousnesses, and non-conception, applying them to reveal the doctrine; 4. presenting the simile of illusion, applying it to reveal the doctrine; 5. presenting the simile of superior, middling, and inferior persons, applying it to reveal the doctrine.
