Below, in explaining the practice of counteracting afflictions, it first answers being in defilement without being tainted like a flower, explaining that a person relying on the Dharma can leave afflictions; later it answers how one abides in afflictions without being defiled, explaining that the Dharma supports the person to cure afflictions. In the former there are three parables: first, the lotus parable; second, the utpala parable; third, the pure wind parable. The single lotus parable directly answers the question above; the latter two are added to help reveal the Dharma. Among these three parables, the first parable is the generation of good: first the parable, next the combination; from "therefore I..." onward adduces the teaching to verify it; from "that icchantika" onward reveals the limitation, excluding the icchantika. The second explains that the wholesome dharmas generated are not tainted by delusion: first the parable, next the combination; from "why?" onward explains it. The third wind parable explains the ability to extinguish delusion: first the parable, next the combination, and finally excluding the icchantika.
