The first [part] also has three [sections]: first, the Tathāgata urges the offering to initiate [the events]; second, from "At that time, the World-Honoured One, wishing to fulfill all sentient beings" onward, he accepts the offering to initiate [the events]; third, from "At that time, the grounds of the forest grove were narrow" onward, he partakes of the offering to initiate [the events]. Regarding the urging of the offering, the text again has three [parts]: 1. directly urging by emitting light; 2. repeatedly urging by emitting light due to the assembly's obstruction; 3. further urging verbally due to Cunda's request for him to remain. In the first, there are three clauses: 1. the light illuminates Cunda; 2. Cunda meets the light, and holds the offering to present it to the Buddha; 3. the gods and humans obstruct him, first obstructing physically with their bodies, and then deterring him verbally. In the second urging, there are six separate clauses: 1. the light illuminates the assembly; 2. the assembly meets the light and immediately consents to Cunda; 3. the assembly promptly approaches the Buddha's place with their offerings, beseeching the Tathāgata to permit the monks to accept them; 4. the monks know the proper time, hold their robes and bowls, and wish to accept their offerings; 5. Cunda adorns the place for the Buddha, making the trichiliocosm resemble the Land of Peace and Bliss; 6. Cunda again entreats the Buddha to remain—the texts are all self-evident. In the third urging, there are two clauses: 1. the Buddha verbally urges the offering; 2. having heard it, the assembly looks up in rejoicing for Cunda and grieves over the frustration of their own [offerings].
