第八純陀徵說所由。一切所施果報既別，如來何故昔說此偈，言一切施皆可讚嘆？下佛為辯，於中四句：一正明所因、二「亦為」下兼明所為、三「如斯偈」下為釋偈義、四「當知」下以理正勸。就初句中，「有緣」總答，「王舍城」下別以顯之，彼優婆塞心無淨信，疑施無報，來問如來，佛欲令其修行布施，故說此偈。後三可知。

Eighth, Cunda inquires into the reason for what was spoken: since the retributions for all givings differ, why did the Tathāgata in the past utter this verse saying that all giving is worthy of praise? Below, the Buddha explains this for him, in four clauses: first, directly clarifying the cause; second, from "also for the sake of" onward, additionally clarifying the intention; third, from "verses such as this" onward, explaining the meaning of the verse; fourth, from "you should know" onward, properly exhorting by way of principle. In the first clause, "having a condition" is the general answer; from "the city of Rājagṛha" onward, it is specifically revealed: that upāsaka lacked pure faith in his mind, doubted that giving brings retribution, and came to question the Tathāgata; the Buddha wished to cause him to cultivate giving, and therefore uttered this verse. The remaining three can be known.
