In the third pair, "If one says wholesome" and so forth cites what the Buddha said in the past. "Ten wholesome and ten unwholesome [actions]" brings up the essence of karma. "Can be done and cannot be done" distinguishes karma in reference to the person: the ten wholesome actions can be done, and the ten unwholesome actions cannot be done. "Wholesome paths and unwholesome paths" distinguishes karma in relation to its fruit: the ten wholesome actions lead a person to human and heavenly realms, so they are called wholesome paths; the ten unwholesome actions lead a person to the three destinies, so they are called unwholesome paths. "White dharmas and black dharmas" distinguishes karma in accordance with its characteristics: wholesome karma is fresh and pure, so it is called white; unwholesome karma is base and defiled, so it is taken as black. That the ordinary person posits two and the wise person posits one shares the same meaning as the previous explanation.
