In the fifth section, it discriminates and clarifies that the Tathāgata's virtuous conduct is thoroughly fulfilled, all faults have been exhausted, and he surpasses other people, so he has no illness. Therein are two parts: first, broadly bringing up three kinds of sick people; second, from 'Kāśyapa, there are five people' onward, broadly discriminating the second among the previous three, contrasting it to reveal the Tathāgata's freedom from illness. The former three people are: ordinary beings as the first, the two vehicles as the second, and bodhisattvas as the third. First, clarifying ordinary beings: 'There are three people in the world whose illnesses are difficult to cure' generally designates them; 'slandering...' and so forth lists their names; from 'such three...' onward reveals the characteristics of being difficult to cure, wherein there is first the dharma, next a simile, and then the application. Next, it clarifies śrāvakas, first with a simile and then the application. Below, it clarifies bodhisattvas, first with a simile, next the application, and then discriminating the full characteristics. Question: Which stage of bodhisattva is this? Below, in the 'Lion' [chapter], it is proclaimed that this is the bodhisattva of the six abodes. As the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: gotra is the first abode, adhimukticaryā is the second, pure mind is the third, caryāpratipatti is the fourth, determination is the fifth, and ultimate is the sixth. These six are subsumed under the category of the definitely determined; therefore, whether meeting a good spiritual friend or not, and whether hearing the Dharma or not, they are definitely destined to attain bodhi. If discussed comprehensively, the good destinies are also included, which is why [people] copy this sūtra out of fear, gain, flattery, deceiving others, and such matters.
