4.62

上來廣明菩薩不了，自下第二舉之以況小目不見。「如是菩薩位階十地，尚不了了知見佛性，況聲聞等」總舉況小。「復次」已下別舉況小，有九復次。初復次中，先明菩薩見性不了，後況二乘；餘中但明菩薩不了，略不況小。皆初立喻，後合可知。自下第二舉佛獨知，彰彼二乘不能得見。於中先明佛性甚深，唯佛能知，次明二乘不能知，「及智者」已下結勸分別。

The above has extensively explained the indistinctness of the bodhisattvas; from here down, the second part adduces this to illustrate that the lesser eye does not see. 'Bodhisattvas like this whose rank has reached the tenth ground still do not clearly and distinctly know and see the buddha-nature, how much less the śrāvakas and others' generally adduces this to illustrate the small. From 'furthermore' onward, it specifically adduces this to illustrate the small, having nine instances of 'furthermore'. In the first 'furthermore', it first explains that the bodhisattvas see the nature indistinctly, and then illustrates the two vehicles; in the rest, it only explains that the bodhisattvas are indistinct, omitting the illustration of the small. In all of them, an analogy is first established, and the application following it can be understood. From here down, the second part adduces that the Buddha alone knows, making clear that those of the two vehicles are unable to see it. Within this, it first explains that the buddha-nature is extremely profound and only a buddha can know it; next, it explains that the two vehicles are unable to know it; from 'and wise persons' onward, it concludes by exhorting discernment.
