In the fourth section, the analogy explains the four fruits examining the sentiment and demanding the reality; the first two are discussed separately, and the latter two are cited collectively. In the first fruit: 'a bystander heard it and brought him to the king' is an analogy for the seven expedient means gathering the sentiment and proceeding to reality. The ordinary person's mind of self is constantly maintained before entering sagehood; although the mind of self is formed, within it, contemplative understanding is able to arise; contemplation accompanies affliction, hence called 'a bystander'. Awaking to one's own mind that the thought of self has not yet been eliminated is, in its sense, spoken of as 'hearing'. The srotāpanna's noble understanding is spoken of as 'the king'. Because contemplation progressively increases, the dormant dispositions in the mind, following contemplation, proceed to the noble, which is called 'brought to the king'.
