Concerning the harmonizing and comprehending, Kāśyapa first asks: "If the eight are the path, the meaning does not correspond," repeating [the premise] to reject it generally; the explanation follows from "Why" downward. First he interrogates, and below analyzes it extensively. Within this, he first cites fourteen phrases of what the Tathāgata said in the past; from "If the eight noble [paths]" downward, he challenges and questions in contrast to the present. There are four distinct phrases: First, citing what is now spoken of the eight noble [paths] as the path to challenge the past as being false; second, from "If those sūtras are not false" downward, using the past not being false to challenge the Buddha's not having spoken of the eightfold correct [path] in the past; third, from "If they did not" downward, using his not having spoken in the past to reproach the Buddha for error; fourth, from "However, I" downward, clarifying that the Buddha is free from error and requesting an explanation of the reason.
