In the first question, Kāśyapa first cites what the Tathāgata said in the past. "Formerly, the Buddha was at one time on the bank of the Ganges in a forest of corpses" cites the Buddha's location; "took some tree leaves" cites the Buddha's action; "addressed the monks," and so forth, cites the Buddha's question; "The monks said," and so forth, cites the past answer; "What I have realized," and so forth, cites what was explained in the past: the dharmas I have realized are like the grass on the great earth, while those I have proclaimed are like the leaves in my hand. Below he questions accordingly: "At that time the World-Honoured One spoke such words: The immeasurable dharmas understood by the Tathāgata—" repeating the Buddha's former words; "if they enter the four truths, then they have already been spoken; if they do not enter, there should be five truths," challenging with an either-or dilemma. Below, the Buddha first praises him, and then explains that these dharmas are all within the four truths.
