In the fourth clause, "Because the nature of the mind is diverse, it is called impermanent" briefly presents the thesis, which is differentiated and clarified below. It first explains the diversity of minds among all worthy ones and noble ones. From "All outsiders have three kinds of minds" onward, it explains the diversity of minds among ordinary persons with right view. From "All outsiders say to their interlocutors that minds are of three kinds" onward, it addresses those outsiders to explain the diversity of minds among ordinary persons with right view; in this part the diversity of minds of outsiders is not yet explained, as it is discussed separately later. Ordinary persons with right view have three kinds of minds: first, the mind that creates karma; second, the mind that receives retribution; third, the mind of affliction. Within the mind that creates karma, "there are three" states the number, and their names are listed and understandable; "associated with pleasure" and so forth is the mind that receives retribution; "associated with greed" and so forth is the mind of affliction. Next it explains the diversity of minds among outsiders: "The mental characteristics of all outsiders are also diverse" briefly presents the thesis, which is differentiated and clarified below. "Namely, diverse associations with delusion" and so forth is the mind of affliction; "diverse minds of advancing and stopping" is the mind that creates karma.
