Or they are divided into four: ignorance, karmic formations, birth, and aging-and-death; mentioning the link of ignorance subsumes craving and grasping; mentioning karmic formations subsumes existence; mentioning birth subsumes consciousness; mentioning aging, sickness, and death subsumes name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling. Or they are spoken of as five: namely, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, and birth; mentioning feeling subsumes consciousness, name-and-form, and so forth; mentioning craving and grasping subsumes ignorance; mentioning existence subsumes karmic formations; mentioning birth subsumes aging, sickness, death, and so forth. Or they are spoken of as six: the causes and effects of the three periods of time. Or they are spoken of as seven: namely, consciousness, name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, feeling, as well as craving and grasping; mentioning consciousness and so forth subsumes birth and aging-and-death; mentioning craving and grasping subsumes ignorance, omitting karmic formations and existence. Or they are spoken of as eight: omitting ignorance, karmic formations, birth, and aging-and-death, and speaking of the other eight, because mentioning consciousness and so forth subsumes birth and aging-and-death, and mentioning craving, grasping, and existence subsumes ignorance and karmic formations—hence they are omitted. Or nine kinds are spoken of, omitting the first three links because they are subsumed under the rest—hence they are omitted. Ten should also be spoken of, but the text abbreviates and does not explain them. Or eleven are spoken of, omitting the single dharma of birth because it is subsumed under the rest. Or twelve are spoken of, as for Kāśyapa; Kāśyapa was previously someone of the pratyekabuddha nature, so the Buddha taught him the twelve links of dependent origination and he thereby attained awakening to the path.
