Next is cultivating [benevolence] taking dharmas as objects. Within taking dharmas as objects, the meaning has seven distinctions: first, contemplating sentient beings as merely the dharmas of the phenomenal marks of the five aggregates, without self and without person, and thus cultivating the mind of benevolence; second, contemplating sentient beings as merely the dharma-enumerations of the arising and ceasing of the five aggregates, without self and without person; third, contemplating the substance of sentient beings as dharma-enumerations of conventional designations through causes and conditions, like a city of earth and timber, without self and without person; fourth, contemplating the substance of sentient beings as illusory dharmas of false marks, like a gandharva city, without self and without person; fifth, contemplating the substance of sentient beings as dharmas existing through false conceptualization, like what is seen in a dream, without self and without person; sixth, contemplating the substance of sentient beings as the nature of the true tathāgatagarbha, dependently arising to form the dharma-enumerations of the five aggregates, without self and without person; seventh, contemplating the substance of sentient beings as the nature of the true tathāgatagarbha, the dependently arisen dharmadhātu, without self and without person. Cultivating the mind of benevolence [in this way], the others are also like this.
