Regarding 'emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness', the treatises explain them differently. According to the Abhidharma, the sixteen modes of practice are divided into three gates: the modes of emptiness and non-self are called the gate of emptiness; the four modes under cessation are the gate of signlessness; the remainder are called wishlessness. If according to the Tattvasiddhi, contemplating the emptiness of the nature of dharmas is called the gate of emptiness; within this emptiness there is no sign to be grasped, which is called the gate of signlessness; within this emptiness there is no mind of craving, seeking, wishing, or practicing, which is called the gate of wishlessness.
