次釋後難，明己實不罵提婆達，示化為之。於中初先牒問總呵，「何以」下釋。釋中有二：一舉化類答、二「我實不」下就實正答。

Next, he explains the subsequent objection, clarifying that he did not actually revile Devadatta, but displayed it as a transformation. In this, he first repeats the question and reproves it in general terms; the explanation begins below with "Why?". In the explanation there are two parts: first, answering by raising analogous instances of transformation; second, below "I truly did not...", answering directly in terms of reality.
