In the explanation through question and answer, Kāśyapa first asks, "The Tathāgata ought to act for the sake of immeasurable multitudes; why do you state solely that it is for the sake of Ajātaśatru?" The Buddha's reply has two parts: First, explaining specifically with respect to the king: "In this assembly now, no one thinks that I definitely enter nirvāṇa, whereas the king thinks that I enter"; hence he acts specifically for him. Second, distinguishing and explaining with respect to those of the king's kind: "My statement that it is for Ajātaśatru is in fact for the kind of beings like the king," not solely for the king. Therein, he first summarily takes up the previous words to reveal that they have not understood; from "why" onward explains it; and from "the Tathāgata's secret words are inconceivable" onward concludes with praise to reveal its profundity.
