In the former round, he first determines the meaning of the three words: that which is called "for" (wei) means for the sake of the buddha-nature; because it causes beings to see the buddha-nature, it is said to be "for." What is called "Ajāta" means "unborn." "Śatru" is a Sanskrit word, translated here as "enemy." Next, discussing in terms of persons, people have delusion and awakening: if in terms of the deluded, the meaning of "unborn" is connected to nature, because deluded persons do not give rise to the [manifestation of] nature; if in terms of the awakened, the meaning of "unborn" is linked to enemy, because awakened persons do not give rise to enemies [of afflictions].
