Within self-benefit, the first four are the benefits of hearing the sūtra, and the latter four reveal the benefits of reflecting upon its meaning. Within the benefits of hearing the sūtra, the first restatement uses doctrinal explanation to clarify the benefit, and the latter three illustrate it through metaphors, all first setting up the metaphor and then joining it [to the doctrine], which can be understood. In the third metaphor, "emitting a thousand rays of light" is merely a manner of speaking. Within the benefits of reflecting upon the meaning, the first three restatements clarify knowing the doctrinal dharmas, and the latter one clarifies knowing practice. Regarding knowing the doctrine, first it knows ultimate truth: "listening to the sūtra and knowing the names" raises the inferior to reveal the superior, and "if one can copy," etc., distinguishes how the superior exceeds the inferior. Next it knows conventional truth: "listening, accepting, and knowing the names" raises the inferior to reveal the superior, and "if one can copy," etc., distinguishes how the superior exceeds the inferior. Below it knows the one reality: "listening to the sūtra without yet seeing" raises the inferior to reveal the superior, and "copying, writing, reciting," etc., distinguishes how the superior exceeds the inferior. Within the dharmas of knowing practice, first regarding the practice of giving it raises the inferior to reveal the superior, distinguishing how the superior exceeds the inferior, and afterward it reveals the remaining practices.
