In explaining neither with-outflows nor without-outflows, it first explains "without outflows." The divisions and combinations are not fixed; in sum, there is only one. Or they are divided into two: first, outflows of view; second, outflows of cultivation. Or they are spoken of as three, as the sūtra speaks of desire, existence, and ignorance—these are the three. Or they are divided into seven, as spoken of below in the "Lion's Roar" chapter, and fully listed by name in the Chéngshí lùn (*Tattvasiddhi-śāstra): first is the outflow of view, meaning afflictions [abandoned by] seeing the truths; second is the outflow of cultivation, meaning afflictions [abandoned by] cultivating the path; third is the outflow of the faculties, meaning the eye and other faculties are able to give rise to various outflows, hence called the outflow of faculties; fourth is called the evil outflow, meaning all evil elephants, evil horses, bad companions, and so forth—whatever generates afflictions is entirely called evil, and since evil can generate outflows, it is called the evil outflow; fifth is the outflow of association, meaning the conditions for generating greed such as clothing, food, and so forth—arising close to them and generating outflows is called the outflow of association; sixth is called the outflow of feeling: as the text below says, receiving the three evil thoughts can give rise to various outflows, hence called the outflow of feeling, not taking the mental factor of feeling to be the outflow of feeling; as for the three evil thoughts, as the Daśabhūmika Sūtra says, thoughts of desire, thoughts of malice, and thoughts of harmfulness are the three; seventh is called the outflow of mindfulness: wrong mindfulness gives rise to outflows, hence called the outflow of mindfulness. Among these seven, the first two are the substance of the outflows, and the latter five are the causes and conditions that generate outflows. The faculties, evil, and association are the conditions generating outflows; feeling and mindfulness, these two, are the causes generating outflows. If divided in detail, there are ten: within view they are divided into two, namely view and doubt; within cultivation they are divided into three: desire, existence, and ignorance; including the remaining faculties and so forth, they together make ten. If relying on what is said below, with feeling, conception, contact, and desire there are a full fourteen; if expanded, they are immeasurable.
