7.17

琉璃正問如來答中，文別有二：一琉璃自為問聞、不聞，如來為解；二琉璃為他問生、不生，如來為釋。此云何知？下文自辨。故下琉璃領解之中云「我蒙佛解聞、不聞」，故聞、不聞偏是自為，「亦令八萬四千菩薩知生、不生」，明生、不生偏是為他。

In the section where Vaiḍūryaprabha properly asks and the Tathāgata answers, the text divides into two: first, Vaiḍūryaprabha for his own sake asks about hearing and not hearing, and the Tathāgata explains for him; second, Vaiḍūryaprabha on behalf of others asks about arising and non-arising, and the Tathāgata explains for them. How is this known? The text below discerns it itself. Thus below, in Vaiḍūryaprabha's expression of understanding, it says, "I have received the Buddha's explanation of hearing and not hearing," so hearing and not hearing was specifically for his own sake; "and it has also caused eighty-four thousand bodhisattvas to know arising and non-arising," which clarifies that arising and non-arising was specifically on behalf of others.
