Next, the six sense objects are allegorised by great thieves. The buddhas and tathāgatas offering instruction from afar is called 'hearing a voice in the air'; reproaching one's dwelling therein is why it says 'Fie!'; taking up the previous admonition is why it says 'This settlement is empty, with no inhabitants.' Adducing those six sense objects to frighten him into advancing is why it says 'Tonight six great thieves will come.' The six sense objects harm goodness, so they are called thieves. Manifesting in the dark mind is called coming at night. Seizing and clinging to the six sense objects harms and destroys the life of wisdom, which is why it says 'If you encounter them, your life will not be preserved'; 'How should one escape?' prompts the intention to seek escape.
