問曰：此倒二乘正起，云何名為煩惱習氣？解云：前明凡夫邪曲具起八倒，學小凡夫亦於如來起此倒心，二乘猶起故說為習，又對二乘所斷煩惱有此殘結故說為習。

Question: Since this inversion is actually produced by the two vehicles, why is it called the residue of afflictions? Explanation: Previously it was clarified that ordinary persons, being crooked and perverse, fully give rise to the eight inversions; ordinary persons who study the Hīnayāna also produce this inverted mind toward the Tathāgata. Because the two vehicles still produce it, it is called a residue. Furthermore, in contrast to the afflictions severed by the two vehicles, having these remaining fetters, it is therefore called a residue.
